About The Industry

  • The number of users on the Internet has increased from 957 Million to 1.97 Billion from September 2005 to September 2010.[1]
  • 49% of “small businesses” maintain a website.[2]
  • 70% of small businesses with revenue of $1 Million or more have a website.[3]
  • Google Analytics is in use in approximately 50% of websites.[4]
  • In the first six months of 2010, businesses and individuals spent approximately $12.1 billion on online advertising. This is 11% more than the first six months of 2009 and up 13.9% from the second quarter of 2009.[5]
  • Forrester estimates that online advertising will grow from 12% of total marketing spend this year to 21% by 2014, meaning that offline ad spend will fall. In fact, Forrester concludes that “overall advertising budgets will decline,” meaning efficiencies are being had by shifting money to the Web.[6]

Search Engine Marketing

  • Search advertising spend topped $5.7 billion in ad dollars in the first half of 2010. Display advertising followed closely behind with spending of $4.4 billion.[7]
  • SEO & PPC spends are forecasted to double by 2014 to over $30 Billion.[8]
  • Nearly two-thirds of consumers (61%) use search engines to help them in their product research decisions leading up to purchase.[9]
  • Display Advertising

  • Estimates place display advertising at $16.9 billion by 2014.[10]
  • The U.S. display advertising market is set to grow 12.9% to $8.56 billion by the end of 2010, up from $7.6 billion in 2009. By 2014, display spending is expected to reach $14.71 billion and take an estimated 40.5% share of the overall online ad market, up from 34.1% this year.[11]

Email Marketing

  • Estimates say that e-mail advertising spending will grow to $616 million in 2011.[12]
  • Email is the second highest marketing budget expenditure of small businesses with 18% devoting 30% or more of their budget.[13]
